About 20 years ago or so I had the idea of building a wooden model of a truck. My nephew gave me this kit to use as a pattern.
To make a long story short, the wooden truck never got built. My nephew, who was 14 or 15 at the time did not want the kit back because he thought it was too difficult. The kit has been bouncing around in various closets ever since.
A couple of weeks ago I got the urge to build a big rig and remembered the kit. When I got it out I found it was a real glue bomb. My nephew had assembled the engine and I think he used a whole tube of glue doing it. To top things off every joint was off by anywhere from 1/32 to 1/16 inch. I managed to disassemble the engine for the most part and got most of the glue residue off. What could not be taken apart I filed or sanded into acceptable shapes.
He had also masked the cab and the front end of the truck with plain brown masking tape. That tape had been there for at least 20 years. When I took it off it left a residue that was hard as stone.
I filed and sanded the parts until I had removed the residue. In doing this it really roughed up the body. I shot it with PlastiCote Filler primer, sanded it and primed it again with regular primer. The parts finally looked pretty good to me.
I painted and assembled the dual rear wheels.
Finally, I have reassembled the engine.
That is where things stand now. I am currently working on the chassis and will post photos as things go along.
