I thought it would be cool to know what you guys do for a living? Or at least what did you do before you retired...
I've had jobs as a plumber, window installer, siding installer, salesman, military, heavy equipment operator, concrete flat worker, big rig driver (20 years), small engine mechanic....and a few in between.....
Right now I own a lawn maintenance business (my favorite gig so far...)
How 'bout you?

Well lets see. After I quit high school in 63, I worked buildin houses for a contractor till 65 then did a couple yrs in the navy, then was a union carpenter/millwright/pile driver. Then I went ta work at Bayer chemical Co in 72 as a mechanic and stayed there for 30 yrs. While workin there I did some auto body and paint work on the side and did custom paint on vans, motorcycles and whatever else. Then I started doin sign lettering and striping on the side until I took disability in 02. All this time I was still buildin models. For a period of time I built a lot of military models, then back ta cars. All the time tryin other stuff for short periods. I liked ta keep busy. After retirement I haven't done much except build models and get older. lol

After high school I worked for a company making windows, doors, lights, etc. for trains. After that came back to my hometown and went ta work as an EMT. Worked as a truck driver for a place that sold building supplies. Drove semi truck long haul for awhile. Worked at a state park in food service division as a senior cook. Moved to Tennessee and worked at a factory making car parts for Saturn. Was a member of a band off and on for about 20 years. Moved back home and drove a taxi till I ended up disabled. Got started back buildin' models about 2 years ago.

I worked in sales for about 5 years, then went to work as a designer in the field of engineering for 30 years. I spend my last 14 years at Sinclair Community College as a Media Technical Coordinator. I retired 2 1/2 years ago and love it. I am almost more busy than when I worked. I do some volenteer work, spend time with my wife doing crafts and the best of all building models of vintage drag cars. I built my first model car back in 1954 and then built some ships and planes for a couple of years. In 1956 I started building cars again and have need looked back. I LOVE MODEL CARS. Like someone said, I am having a lot of fun in my second childhood. Barry

I'm retired from the California Highway Patrol. Worked there for about 29 years. I retired from the East Los Angeles in 1994 due to an on duty injury requiring back surgery. I'm proud to say I retired as the senior Sergeant in ELA. Following my retirement I work as a medical transcriptionist for about 10 years.
Now days I play with my grandkids and great grandkids, travel with our RV and model. Oh yeah, I also do what "she who must be obeyed" tells me to.

During college and for a few years after I was with the Chippendale dancers, also did a small layout for Playgirl. But the assets faded and I worked for Gates Rubber Co. for 28 years as a district manager and trainer. Now I am a stained glass artist and sell through a couple of outlets. Fairly new to modeling and way short of the skills others have, but I enjoy it and that is the main thing.

Well, been awhile since I told anyone what I do/done. Wish I was retired buy got a few yrs. yet. Graduated in 75, and worked a few factory jobs before starting a small construction co. Have played drums since I was a kid and still do. Moved to AZ. in my late 20's and worked as maint. super for property managment co"s. then about 10 yrs. as superintendant for home builder. Had a small independent record label and music studio in AZ. and played drums for a tv church for about 7 yrs. Moved back to Arkansas about 3 yrs. ago and along with doing some remodel work, been working at a buddys shop painting/restoring cars. Looks like I will be starting a new job with Rheem air cond. manufacturer in about a week in tech support. This will most likely be the job I retire from. Drew

Wow!
You know, I was just curious as to what you guys do for a living but I got more than I bargained for here....I think it's cool that you guys have shared who you are instead of just what you do....there's really a lot of diversity out there! It just goes to show that a model builder came come from anywhere! We all have our paths to follow but model cars is our common thread! Sweet!
Eddie, I've talked to you on the phone enough to know that you're a fighter man! I know you'll be ok!
I've enjoyed reading your replies....we have a great bunch of guys on this forum!

Well I think its only right I tell my story too. I graduated in 1980, had alreadt gained some experience in printing. My brother was in printing and had a part time printshop on the side where I got the bug at thirteen. Stayed in printing untill I had two back surgeries and one neck surgery. I havent worked in six years and Ed got me into building models. Now I do that and spend a lot of time with six grandkids. I spend more time with them than I did my own two kids. Funny how that works. Oh and unfortionately I was never chippandale material. Brad

I have been a professional tattoo artist for 26 years. Ive worked in 6 studios in that time, and owned three of them. I have traveled a little with work, and could go anywhere in the world, but i choose to live in a small town of around 5 thousand, by the sea. In fact, im about a quarter mile from the beach, and behind me is beautiful rain forest. I live with my old shop girl, (were not together) and moved here not long after she had her daughter, Kira. The mom is a little handycapped, so i do most of the chores (All). I was at Kiras birth, and love her like my own, and she thinks the world of me. So when im not doing those jobs, im working on my 1.1 1930 Model A Ford truck.

Well, lets see, graduated with Associates Degree in Business Management in '85, started working at a local store in their Automotive Dept. ( my favorite job). Left there to start a career at A.T.&T., that lasted until I was laid off in about 1992, then I went to work at a pager co., left there, went to work for a building materials store. In 1993, I started with a fastener company that sells to commercial contractors, and have been there every since....Will probably be there until I retire, whenever that will be....I have been building off and on since I was probably 10 years old....sold my entire collection about 10 years ago, got back into modeling seriously about 2 years ago.....now my basement looks as though I have had my collection my entire life....yea,, lots of plastic...
